Boat crash results in oil spill in Gulf of Mexico

The U.S. Coast Guard says cleanup efforts are underway after a boat crashed into an oil platform near Breton Sound, spilling about 126 gallons of crude oil.

News outlets report a jack-up rig was used to pump water through the affected line, securing the source of the leak. According to a Sunday news release, a drum has also been secured below the failed portion of line to catch any further product that may be discharged.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a call Thursday reporting the 61-foot (18.6-meter) vessel hit the Breton Sound 18 production platform, resulting in the spill of crude oil.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the incident is under investigation.
